 U sami sumrak obukli su Poljičani svoje nošnje, užgali improvizirane komine, doveli su magarca upregnutog alatima i voće iz polja, a zrakom se počeo širio neodoljiv miris Dalmacije.  Sasvim dovoljno za početak trećeg Festivala poljičkog soparnika. O interesu domaćih ljudi, ali i brojnih turista dovoljno govori podatak kako se 150 velikih soparnika, čiji komadi su se prodavali po simboličnih pet kuna, razgrabilo u samo sat vremena, pa su svi koji su malo okasnili ostali praznih ruku i želudaca... Nakon još jedne prave dalmatinske fešte bez mirisa ćevapa, u zraku je ostala tek vječna dilema ide li u soparnik s blitvom na sitno narezana kapula ili ne.  We were lucky enough to be invited to a very special party on Friday – up in the hills behind Dugi Rat and Omiš, after a drive that is not for the feint hearted, but included spectacular views of the River Cetina gorge. The village festivities went on for three days with local Klapa music (multi part harmony singing) and much more besides. After the open air presentation, we were treated to the secrets of the local cuisine – for want of a better description, a huge spinach pancake, crisped on a large stone between red hot embers ... |

Everyone in Split comes out to walk at dusk, and the broad esplanade along the Adriatic fills up with groups of teen-agers, courting couples, young families equipped with tricycles, and well-dressed grandparents. This is the korso, the local version of the Italian passeggiata, the ritualized stroll by evening past the palm trees and through the warm seaside night along the harbor, or into the old town, through the gates of Diocletian's Palace and on into the medieval town squares, where ice cream is sold, where outdoor cafes are tucked in among the medieval buildings ... |

When I was asked this summer to lecture on a cruise along the Dalmatian coast, I accepted in a matter of minutes, having heard tales for years about its craggy beauty and captivating old cities, but I never dreamed that I would eat and drink well. I guess I should have known better... As in Venice, which ruled much of the region for centuries, plenty of pasty risotto and overcooked squid is on offer in Croatia. In Dubrovnik an entire street, Prijeko, is lined with restaurants whose staff members stand outside, noisily touting their indifferent food. Again as in Venice, the best dishes are the simplest; ventures into creativity and complexity often end in fiascoes ... |

"You will cry when you see it. Bring tissues. You will need them". We are finishing a marathon meal at Macondo, a seafood restaurant on a nameless back alley in Hvar. My dinner companion, a local painter, writer and actor named Niksa Barisic, was talking about a historic theater built in 1612 during the Dalmatian Renaissance and still in use half a millennium later. But he could just as well have been describing his feelings for Hvar itself, a mountainous, lavender-scented isle set in the blue, sun-blasted Adriatic Sea off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.  Dugi Rat, between Split and Omiš, has a fascinating history. Originally, the population of Dugi Rat, and its neighbouring villages was concentrated in the hills. Nearly 100 years ago, the local population also descended to the coast. Most of the tourists stay in the numerous apartments for rent as there are no major hotels, and, in the summer, the place is buzzing with cafes and restaurants. In the next few years, Dugi Rat seems set to have a prestigious development in place of the factory – hotels, marina, residential units, etc. Watch this space for more news on that in due course ... |

Attractions 
“Rise and shine…!” It was 07:15 and I definitely wasn’t ready to shine. Having agreed to an early start, I forced myself out of my warmth and back onto the road. The exciting news is we have our first taker for Couchsurfing since leaving Rome (well actually second, the first we embarrassingly stood up :( ) This gave us a 20 km walk along the Adriatic. It was marvelous! Stopping frequently to relax and play backgammon on deserted beaches, we still made good time. Strolling into Omiš at around 15:30, we found a café to wait out the 2½ hours till Ivan, our host, would finish work ...
